In the year 1953, when the separate Andhra State was formed, many of the Telugu families living in and around Triplicane area left for Kurnool, the new Capital of Andhra. At that time Sri G.V. Sethapathy and his son Sri Gidugu Rama Murthy were living in No.9,Office Venkatachala Mudali Street, Triplicane. Their co-tenants are Sri K.L. Kantha Rao (Commercial Tax Department) Sri Y. Narayana Rao (Municipal Administration Department)Sri M. Narayana Rao (Railways),Sri Vemaraju Bhanu Murthy (Andhra Bank) They used to exchange Telugu Books and periodicals purchased by one with others. In the close by street, one Sri Uppada Kalishankar, Sri Adavikolanu Rama Rao, Sri Kanuguthi Raghunadha Rao, and Sri G.L. Narayana of Oxford University Press were staying and all these people used to meet on one occasion or other.

Sri G.V. Rama Murthy with his co-tenants met the families in Akbarsaheb Street and mooted out the idea of starting a small club/association for recreational purposes of the Telugu families living in that area. Sri Kalishankar has readily accepted the idea and volunteered to initiate and work out for this project.


Then they started collecting a data of Telugu people living in and around Triplicane area and used to assemble in the house of Sri U. Kalishankar to discuss the possibility and other modalities of starting an Association for Telugu people in that area. With this object in mind, they met Sri P. Venkata Subbaiah Naidu of Nestle Products, Sri N. Chiranjeevi, Civil Engineering Contractor and Sri Jalagam Subramanyam Naidu, Jewellery Merchant who have also encouraged this project and promised to help in every way possible

At an informal meeting of these members, on the Ugadi Day in 1954 at the house of Sri U. Kalishankar it was discussed to name the Association. The names of Telugu Samajam, was suggested by elders and 'Telugu Welfare Samiti' was suggested by some youngsters.
Finally, Sri Jalagam Subramanyam Naidu has suggested the name of 'Telugu Mahajana Samajam. And it was accepted by one and all though with some reluctance by youngsters.

Thus the name "Telugu Mahajana Samajam" was baptized on Ugadi day of 1954.
